More Math Classes Will Be Required in 2009. Next Year’s Seniors Need Three to Graduate. Class of 2012 Will Need Four.
The Columbian reported in November 2007 that the Washington State Board of Education held an open meeting in Vancouver for the parents, teachers, and students of Clark County. They wanted input on what will be new statewide graduation requirements. And while many did not agree with the new standards, all are now forced to start preparing for them.
Beginning with the senior class of 2009, an extra math class will be required to obtain a high school diploma in the state of Washington. This will mandate three years of math for high school students; only two have been required until now. There are also plans to require a fourth math class by 2012.
All of this change is necessary, according to the board, to prepare students for the global marketplace. The board policy director stated that 44 percent of students entering college must take remedial classes because they are not prepared. She also cited that the state had not reviewed graduation policies since 1985.
More math classes will place more demands on students. It will be particularly difficult on students who routinely perform low in math classes and on the math section of the WASL.
